Ultrafabrics’ AV Bio technology for aviation

Ultrafabrics and its partner Tapis have officially launched AV Bio, a bio-based performance fabric, which was unveiled at Aircraft Interiors Expo in May.

“AV Bio represents a monumental advancement in sustainable technology for the aviation industry,” said Barry Silverman, VP of marketing and branding at Ultrafabrics. “We’re thrilled to introduce a product that seamlessly integrates renewable plant-based materials into our multi-layer construction, setting a new standard for sustainability without compromising on performance or comfort.”

AV Bio incorporates renewable plant-based materials into its multi-layer construction, to reduce reliance on finite resources. It’s a customisable solution – AV Bio technology can be tailored and integrated into seating collections and vertical surfaces. By replacing a portion of the polyurethane material with bio-based content, AV Bio is designed to provide extreme comfort and durability, enhancing the passenger experience while meeting stringent aviation standards.

AV Bio is intended to support airlines in achieving sustainability goals by offering advanced seating materials that contribute to fuel reduction, CO2 emissions savings, and overall economic benefits. “Ultrafabrics’ proprietary Takumi technology allows for the seamless integration of sustainable materials into every layer of its products, offering airlines a lighter-weight solution that supports their sustainability initiatives,” said Matthew Nichols, sales director at Tapis.

AV Bio’s focus on sustainability extends beyond the technology to the choice of suppliers. AV Bio incorporates Tencel Modal fibres sourced from certified sustainable forests. Then there is Susterra Propanediol; utilising bio-based resin sourced from US dent corn, AV Bio promotes regenerative agriculture and renewable feedstock without competing with food supply or agricultural land use. AV Bio also uses recycled Repreve polyester and sustainable Ecovero rayon fibres in its backcloth.

“As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, AV Bio exemplifies Ultrafabrics’ commitment to sustainable innovations across all transportation sectors and beyond,” said Silverman. “It’s a testament to our aggressive environmental commitments and dedication to shaping a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
