With Alexit FST EcoChrome, paint manufacturer Mankiewicz has created a single-layer paint system to achieve the chrome look in aircraft interiors without electroplating. Mankiewicz said its solution is faster, less costly, and less harmful to the environment than the traditional method.
Coating systems have been used for quite some time to simulate metallic effects. However, the company explained that chrome occupies a special place in the range of metallics; to achieve a chrome-like effect with a coating, particularly fine pigments are required so that the human eye can no longer discern them. Mankiewicz said the special mixture it has invented can have a subtle flop effect, giving each part a lively appearance. It is also available in a range of colours beyond the classic chrome-silver look.
EcoChrome can be applied to both smooth and textured substrates – for handrails and buttons. The company said it will give a very striking effect when applied to the typical pre-textured interior substrates. The single-layer coating system can be sprayed onto various thermoplastics and pre-treated aluminium – in most cases directly onto the appropriately cleaned substrate. Mankiewicz said that with high yield and low dry film thickness, EcoChrome is a safe and economical alternative to conventional chrome plating.
The new chromium replacement is one of many developments that Mankiewicz has driven forward in the past decade aiming to contribute to environmental protection and sustainability. Mankiewicz will exhibit its latest highlights at Aircraft Interiors Expo, to be held in Hamburg, Germany, on 28-30 May.
