Vision Systems unveils EDW with integrated video display

A new electronically dimmable window (EDW) integrating a transparent video display will be exhibited by Vision Systems at Aircraft Interiors Expo, to be held in Hamburg, Germany, on April 5-7, 2016.

The solution enables passengers to regulate the amount of light and heat entering the cabin, and to interact with a moving map and other services displayed on the window. The passenger can control the window through a transparent touchscreen incorporated into the glazing, or the crew can control it through the flight attendant panel. The dimmable system is based on suspended particle device (SPD) technology and the interactive display uses a transparent, flexible and thin color video screen.

Other EDW solutions to be highlighted by Vision Systems include a 2.7mm curved lens composed of X-Lite composite glass; a bi-zone dimmable window; the latest version of its dimmable cockpit sun visor, integrating transparent photovoltaic cells into the polycarbonate; and an add-on dimmable solution that covers the lateral cockpit windows and is designed to be removed quickly, without tools, in an emergency.

The company will also display two versions of its wireless IFE solution – one dedicated to regional aviation and the other to executive aviation. The system is supported by a single box. Content includes movies, TV series, music, magazines, games, daily press, tourist information and local advertising with discount vouchers. The system can implement priority data flows for safety videos and announcements, putting tablets on hold. Other options include internet access, email, video conferencing, VoIP, remote diagnosis, software upgrade and audio and video content updates via a ground platform. Various configurations are possible, using personal or company tablets. Vision Systems develops a customized user interface and content for each customer. Operators can provide the entertainment solution to passengers via a downloadable app running on all major operating systems or via web browsers.

In other news, customized helicopter window frames produced by Vision Systems, in collaboration with composite processes specialist CT1, are on display at JEC World, held in Paris, France, on March 8-10, 2016.

Vision Systems announced in June 2015 that it had been selected by Airbus Helicopters to manufacture jettisonable windows for the H160. The windows are made of PMMA, tinted, and bonded on thermocompressed carbon frames developed in partnership with CT1. The project also includes emergency mechanical unlocking systems, door seals and bad weather windows.

In 2015 Vision Systems opened a 1,000m² production plant dedicated to composites. It has several composite projects in development, including motorized shades, electronically dimmable solutions, large bay windows with frames and opening mechanisms, helicopter doors and cyclic sticks.
