Magnesium under the spotlight at UK symposium

Magnesium’s potential for the automotive and aerospace industries is the focus of a symposium – Thoughts and Reflections on Magnesium Use: Symposium – being held at the UK’s Birmingham City University on July 20, 2017.

The university entered an R&D and educational partnership with magnesium specialist Meridian Lightweight Technologies United Kingdom (MLTUK) earlier in 2017, focusing on magnesium use.

The International Magnesium Association, the High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute and Forum for the Future are also involved and will participate at the symposium.

“Magnesium, designed and optimized in the correct manner, will provide an enhanced strength, stiffness and stability, and will deliver a higher specific yield strength and specific modulus than nearly all other structural metals,” said Stephen Brown, engineering manager, MLTUK.

“Our partnership with Birmingham City University is committed to improving the industry understanding of magnesium and will encourage the automotive industry to improve.

“The industry is increasing its use of magnesium yearly and our partnership intends to lead the sector, which presently lacks the skills and expertise regarding the dos and don’ts necessary when designing and developing in magnesium.”
