LBAS installs FANS-1/A via Inmarsat satcom on Challenger 604

A solution for FANS communication via Inmarsat satcom has been developed by Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services (LBAS) for installation on a Challenger 604, and approved by the FAA and EASA. The Berlin-based company says FANS was previously only operable with Iridium satcom on this aircraft model.

“Instead of re-equipping a complete new satcom system, customers now have a very economical solution by using their existing Rockwell Collins SAT-906 systems,” said Marek-Sebastian Rinke, senior engineer at LBAS.

LBAS worked with avionics systems integration specialist ASM, which provided the STC on behalf of Rockwell Collins.

FANS is now mandatory throughout the ICAO North Atlantic region at Flight Levels 350-390.
