The RFID tool management system from HAECO Hong Kong has been named runner-up for Best RFID Implementation (Other Industry) at the RFID Journal Awards 2018.

HAECO Hong Kong introduced the RFID tool management system for its Airframe Services operations in 2017, aiming to improve safety and efficiency. The system consists of handheld RFID readers, tool tags and a smartphone app.

The RFID tool management system tags each tool, so mechanics can capture all tags in their toolboxes with their cell phones to ensure no tools are left inside an aircraft or returned to the wrong place. The app alerts the mechanic of any missing or misplaced tools and assists in locating them.

Traditionally, mechanics would need to account for their tools at the end of each shift using a paper inventory of their toolboxes. The inventory would then be checked by a supervisor, and the whole process would take 10 to 15 minutes. Using the HAECO RFID management system, this process is shortened to two to three minutes

HAECO Hong Kong has tested the system over the fourth quarter of 2017 and plans to implement it throughout its operations in phases.
