Kalogridis places fiber optics into woven carpet

Kalogridis International has unveiled its latest development – the placement of optic fibers into carpet after it has been woven. The company first put fiber optics in aircraft carpet as early as 1985, but this new technique enables the fiber optics to be placed “in any pattern from stars to a sunburst, and for any practical use, from a company logo to exit arrows,” according to Sarah Dupree, senior designer at the company. Kalogridis is currently designing a carpet with a fiber optic spiderweb for a Gulfstream G650.

Similar to the fiber optic creations is the embedding of LED light wiring into a carpet, most commonly for practical purposes, such as in the entrance and on either side of the passageways. An LED carpet recently delivered for a royal family in the Middle East includes LED lighting around the bed in the stateroom as an artistic touch. Both the fiber optic and LED solutions can be programmed in different colors and sequences.

For some years, Kalogridis has also been experimenting with fluorescent yarn woven into the carpet. The carpet has a thick yarn to create a large ‘ultra-loop’ pile. The technique also allows the creation of everything from random patterns to scenes and corporate logos. When the cabin is dark, the fluorescent yarn patterns emit a form of luminesence as a result of previously absorbed light. According to the company’s head of quality assurance, Howard Stockford, the most recent fluorescent design is a wave pattern created for a new customer.
